Why is internet pornography so powerful? The Triple AAA Engine drives people to pornography above and beyond and unlike other drugs: Access, Affordability, and Anonymity.
Access
It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Whenever I have an itch, it’s there. Whenever I want, it never says, “No.” Just as Craig Gross of XXXChurch said when debating Ron Jeremy, “Porn is knocking down everyone of your doors. They don’t care if you’re 58 or 8 years old…” (clip at 2:56 mark). Pornography does not discriminate based on any demographic: age, sex/gender, race, etc. It simply doesn’t care as long as you visit.
Affordability
It’s free and it’s free on purpose. People in the porn industry know how addictive it is. Same thing happens with people using other drugs. Typically one’s first or first few uses are “free” or “on someone else” to introduce them to the drug. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve gone out with buddies, who know I don’t drink, and they offer to buy me a drink suggesting that I “just try it” or “let it grow on you.” Unlike alcohol and other drugs, one can be a porn addict and never spend a dime on pornography. However, the further one dives into porn the more willing a person is to pay for it.
Anonymity
People engage in all kinds of things online that they wouldn’t do any where else. Take for example this past Breast Cancer Awareness Week. People would random say colors on their Facebook account, and when you look why here is what they were responding to: “In support of breast cancer, tell everyone the color of your bra as your status.” I cannot tell you how many PASTOR’S wives I saw do this. Would these people do this in person if someone said on stage, “To show your support of breast cancer, please turn to the guy next to you, not your husband, and tell them the color of your bra.” Now all your friends, your guy friends, some of which you would never even allow into your bedroom, know what’s in your intimates drawar. Same with pornography. People engage in all kinds of things online that they wouldn’t do any where else. When you engage in it enough times, it desensitizes you, and it is only a matter of time before one acts out.
